In April 2022, Malgorzata Paszko traveled through Uzbekistan and discovered the masterpieces of Islamic architecture in Samarkand and Bukhara. She was captivated by the monumental power of these brick-and-mosaic buildings, crowned with immense turquoise domes erected to the glory of God.

Beyond the majesty of their proportions and the virtuosity of their Muslim ornamentation, it was the revelation of blue that profoundly transformed her vision. The Prussian blue, which had been prominent in her nocturnal landscapes between 2010 and 2020, gave way to the intensity of ultramarine. In these recent compositions, architecture and skies merge in a single, deep, vibrant blue light, enhanced with gold, lifting forms out of time and endowing them with a new spiritual dimension.

In this exhibition entitled Transfigurations, Malgorzata Paszko, inspired by the magnificence of Islamic architecture, reinvents her painting in a sovereign celebration of matter and color, where matter becomes light and color becomes sacred.

Malgorzata Paszko. Born in Poland in 1956, Malgorzata Paszko entered the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1975. The following year, she left her country and settled in France, where she continued her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

In 1979, shortly after completing her training at the Beaux-Arts, her talent was noticed by Claire Burrus, who presented Paszko’s works at her Galerie “Le Dessin.” Since then, her paintings, engravings, and drawings have been regularly exhibited at major contemporary art fairs across Europe, including FIAC, Art Basel, ARCO, Art Brussels, and Art Paris, among others, as well as in numerous institutional exhibitions. Over the years, she has received several awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Prix de la Villa Médicis, which granted her a one-year residency at the Villa Medici in Rome.

Her collaboration with Alice Mogabgab began in 1999 and includes a series of solo exhibitions: Forms and Figures (2002), Lights and Reflections (2005), Trails and Reflections (2007), Paths, Reflections and Trees (2009), Night Heart & Day Light (2013), Spring Rain (2016), and 40 Years of Painting (2018). These exhibitions in Beirut were accompanied by catalogues.

Before a painting by Malgorzata Paszko, admiration cannot be reduced to pictorial matter or its formal arrangement, nor to the singular beauty of landscapes, greenery, light, and nocturnal reflections. One rather remains on a threshold, hesitating—an uncertainty that is not unsettling, but fertile—between gravity and flight, between matter and image. — Yves Michaud, monograph on the artist.

Today, Paszko’s works are included in various public collections, such as the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, the Musée Picasso in Antibes, the Fondation de France in Paris, the Association Française d’Actoin Artistique, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Banque Nationale de Paris, as well as the FRAC Basse-Normandie and Les Abattoirs – FRAC Occitanie in Toulouse. They are also present in several international collections, including the City of Dudelange in Luxembourg, the University of Torun in Poland and the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, as well as in various institutions in China, including the Longzhou Museum, the Tucheng Museum and the Chengdu Museum of Art and Calligraphy.
